Laser Hair Removal FAQs

Some frequently asked questions about laser hair removal.

Understanding hair removal

In the past, the usual remedies for unwanted hair included plucking, shaving, waxing or chemical depilatories. Some are painful, some are messy, and all are only temporary. For long-term hair removal, electrolysis is popular and effective, but it is a time-consuming procedure, which can be painful and is useful only in removing hair in small areas. It typically takes months and numerous regular visits to clear even small areas, like the upper lip.

Laser hair removal - a better solution

Laser hair removal is a more effective solution. The LightSheer diode laser is a state-of-the-art system specially designed to remove unwanted hair faster, with less discomfort and more reliably than other methods.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is laser hair removal? How does it work?

A laser produces a beam of highly concentrated light. The light emitted by the LightSheer diode laser is well absorbed by the pigment (melanin) in the hair follicles.

During the procedure the upper layer of the skin is compressed and cooled with the special cooling handpiece. The laser then pulses light for a fraction of a second, just long enough to heat up the hair and destroy the follicles' ability to re-grow.

Unlike electrolysis, which kills one hair follicle at a time, the laser reaches and treats hundreds of follicles at a time. So, in a few minutes, LightSheer can effectively treat an area that would take over an hour with electrolysis.

Who can benefit from laser hair removal? Is it suitable for men, too?"

male torso

This laser procedure may be used for both men and women. Any skin type may be treated including those with Asian and African American skin. The hair to be lasered must be pigmented.

Laser hair removal is an ideal solution for men with excessive hair on their back, chest, and legs. Facial hair removal with the LightSheer diode laser is helpful for men who suffer from ingrown hairs and razor burn.

The LightSheer causes permanent hair reduction and delayed regrowth of the treated hair follicles. In a long-term clinical study of 92 patients, all had temporary hair loss and
89% had long-term hair loss. Also, regrowing hairs were shown to be thinner and lighter than previously.

How long does it take?

hair three phases

All hair goes through three growth phases: active growth (anagen), regression (catagen), and resting (telogen.) The laser targets anagen hairs due to their abundance of pigment (melanin.)

Because, at any one time, different hairs are in different growth phases, five to six treatments are typically required for best results.

The length of each laser treatment may be anywhere from a few minutes to an hour or more, depending on the size of the area being treated. A few days after a treatment, the hair in the treated area may appear to be re-growing. However, within 5 to 20 days after treatment, this dead hair falls out.

What can I expect? Does it hurt?

Laser treatment itself should cause a tingling sensation. Most clients tolerate the procedure well. The LightSheer "cool-tip" hand piece is designed to move heat away from the skin during treatment for increased effectiveness, safety, and comfort.

The appearance of the treated area immediately after a laser session will vary from person to person depending on the extent of treatment and skin type. After a treatment, there should be some redness and swelling which should disappear in a short time. Less often, some blistering may occur but this usually resolves quickly. You can read the Pre- and Post-Treatment Client Instructions page for more information.

Initially, hair in the treated area may appear to be re-growing. However, the dead hair falls out 5 to 20 days after treatment.

Is Laser Hair Removal safe?

The LightSheer system was developed from years of research at the Wellman Laboratories of Photomedicine, one of the world's leading medical laser research institutions. The laser is pulsed, or "turned on," for only a fraction of a second and the duration of each pulse is just long enough to disable the hair follicles. A unique component of the LightSheer system, the actively cooled sapphire handpiece, was designed to protect the skin by actively cooling it before, during, and after the laser light is transmitted. It also actively draws off heat from the skin surface, which further protects the skin from injury. White papers, discussing safety and effectiveness are available at the Lumenis Ltd. web site.

Back to FAQ list

Who should NOT have laser hair removal?

Because the laser targets the pigment in the hair follicles, your unwanted hair must be pigmented for laser hair removal to be effective. Laser hair removal does not work on blonde, gray or white hairs.

Please discuss any history of response to laser treatments, medical conditions, medications, allergies and skin pigmentation problems at your initial consultation as these may contraindicate laser hair removal treatment.
